There’s nothing like the Perth summer for outdoor entertaining and visits to the beach. However, the hot weather also means that you’re more likely to become dehydrated. If you always forget your water drink bottle or just don’t think about drinking water, you run the risk of becoming seriously dehydrated which can lead to headaches, lack of energy, dry skin and muscle cramps. So, what can you do to stay hydrated this summer? Let’s take a look!
Set water goals each day
If you know you’re not drinking enough water, set some goals around how much water you want to drink. Every person’s water needs vary depending on a number of factors but a good starting point is to aim for two litres each day. If this is where you’re starting, aim to drink four 500ml drink bottles during the day. Remember that you shouldn’t down your daily water intake in one go – space it out!
Take a break from the heat
It’s lovely to be out and about in the warm weather but staying out in the sun on very hot days can lead you to become dehydrated much more quickly. This is especially the case if you’re exercising. If you’re out in the heat or exercising vigorously, take regular breaks and get a drink of water.
Watch your alcohol intake
Summer is prime time for socialising and entertaining and a refreshing cocktail or glass of wine might go down very well in the heat. However, remember that alcohol is dehydrating for the body. To combat this, while also enjoying a couple of drinks, alternate alcohol with a large glass or bottle of water. Your body will thank you the next day!
Increase your fruit and veggie intake
You don’t just stay hydrated with water – we get up to 20% of our water intake from our food and fruit and veggies having the highest water content. So don’t just focus on drinking more water, you should also get as many fresh fruit and veggies into your diet to combat dehydration. Watermelon and cucumber are especially high in moisture!
Always have a drink bottle ready
When you’re in a rush, it’s too easy to forget about bringing a drink bottle if it means getting it out of the cupboard and filling it up. To stay hydrated when you’re out and about, having a couple of good quality drink bottles filled up and ready to go in the fridge is the way to go. This means that you can grab a bottle without thinking as you head out the door.
