Hypotonic vs Isotonic vs Hypertonic: Which Performance Solution is Right for You?
Aqualyte Solution 25g

There are lots of different performance drinks on the market and they use different solutions for varying results. Here at Aussie Natural, we understand that you sometimes need a little more than just water to get your hydration levels up and we carry Aqualyte for quick hydration. Today, we’re looking at the various sports drink solutions on the market so you know which one is right for you!

Isotonic

Most people have heard about isotonic drinks. They’re designed both to deliver hydration and energy to the body and are often used during endurance sports. Isotonic drinks are around the same concentration as human blood. Isotonic drinks generally have around 6-8% carbohydrates and tend to be most useful during short, high intensity exercise. While isotonic drinks are low in sodium, a lot of isotonic drinks are high in sugar and can also upset the stomach in large quantities which can have a dehydrating effect.

Hypertonic

While other performance solutions are focussed on hydration, hypertonic solutions have a focus on providing energy. Although they do offer hydration, this is secondary to energy delivery. Hypertonic drinks have a higher concentration than your blood and have plenty of carbohydrates to help fuel intensive activities. Because hypertonic drinks are more focussed on giving the body carbohydrates through salt and sugar, they don’t offer the thirst quenching benefits of other solutions if you’re dehydrated. Hypertonic solutions are often used as a recovery drink and it’s important to remember that if you’re using this option while exercising, you also need a drink which combats dehydration. Because their purpose is to delivery energy, they’re also comparatively high in salt and sugar so should be used in moderation.

Hypotonic

If you need quick hydration, hypotonic solutions are the way to go. These drinks are a lower concentration than your blood and deliver fast hydration for the body due to their ability to be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. They’re low in both sugar because their purpose is to quench thirst rather than provide energy. Hypotonic drinks help replace fluid lost through sweat and are great at preventing dehydration during exercise or when working outside. This performance solution is also gentle on the stomach so you’re less likely to experience bloating which can occur when fluid isn’t absorbed properly.
