This ban follows other states, including South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory, who already have similar laws in place. Do the laws apply to bottled water?
At this stage, the new laws only apply to the lightweight, single use plastic bags commonly used in major supermarkets and they don’t apply to bottled water. However, the new laws have made a lot people consider the impact of plastic use on the environment and think about the steps they can take to reduce their environmental footprint.
What can I do?
If you like the convenience of bottled water on the go but are aware of the environmental impact, there are a few positive steps you can take. Firstly, ensure that any bottled water that you purchase is 100% recyclable so you can be confident that the materials can be reused. The next step is to make sure that you remember to place your discarded plastic bottle in dedicated recycling, so that you avoid it ending up in landfill.
