Getting to know water filters!

With all the different types of water out there and all the hype that goes with each, it can be very easy to get confused about which types of water are really the best for you.

Both tap and bottled water have numerous organic and inorganic contaminants in them. Long term exposure to these contaminants over time can weaken your immune system and cause cellular damage or even cell mutation (cancer).

Most people will have heard about filtered water but don’t really understand the beneficial purifying processes that occurs. In order to understand why drinking filter water over tap water is beneficial, we must first understand the role filters play in our health.

How do water filters work?

Contained within our water supplies are many particles of various shapes and sizes – they can be in the form of things like sediment, rust, asbestos fibres and cysts.

The first stage of filtration, relies on mechanical filtration via a particle barrier. The process involves trapping any harmful particles in a barrier, which can be made from various material. The barriers are rated by the size of the particles they can trap. A single particle is commonly known in size by its “Micron” rating – the lower the micron size the smaller the particle and the better the filtration.

The following image from Everpure illustrates micron size:

So you can appreciate that water filter systems that filter between 5 microns to 1 micron in size are filtering the tap water very finely and producing high quality filtered water, similar if not the same as some bottled waters.

The second process that occurs is chemical filtration which helps to improve the taste and smell of water. Water may taste strange or smell off due to the water coming into contact with the many millions of kilometres of ageing underground pipes in our delivery system. The level of our dams will also influence the quality of our tap water. The lower the dam level the lower the water quality.

The second process for removing the above is through the introduction of carbon. Carbon is introduced in many forms it can be in granular, block or powdered. The pores within carbon absorb nasty tastes and odours and remove chlorine from the water supply.
