Achieving Balance When Hydrating

1. What is Water Intoxication?

For those that are new to this term, water intoxication is when your body becomes overhydrated. This is quite rare as most people tend to drink too little, but health conscious people or those suffering from extreme dehydration that then rehydrate too quickly can also suffer from this condition. Essentially, water intoxication will lead to an imbalance in your body between water and salts. There is more water in your system than salts, causing them to become diluted and less effective. Dehydration is the other side of the coin; it’s an imbalance when there are more salts than water.

2. The Dangers of Water Intoxication

Some of the symptoms associated with water intoxication are headaches, muscle spasms, vomiting, and nausea. In extreme cases, a person could even develop seizures and/or lapse into a coma. Obviously, this is pretty serious, and it is so important to maintain a balance of salts, water, and electrolytes to stay healthy.

3. Effective Water Drinking Strategies

It is always a good idea to have some 1.5 litres water bottles handy to stay hydrated, but how can you avoid water intoxication? The first thing to consider is whether you are actually at risk of water intoxication at all. It is a fact that more physically active people that drink more water are at far greater risk than sedentary people. If your idea of a workout is a casual stroll to the shops, it is unlikely that you are at risk. However, if you workout a lot or perhaps work outside during summer months, you will need to take care. Luckily, our bodies have warning signals for us that tell us that we are over hydrating, such as a feeling of confusion, disorientation, and nausea.

If you experience these symptoms, and your mouth is not dry, there is a good chance that you are suffering from water intoxication. As a rule of thumb, an adult even when exercising should not be drinking more than one litre of water per hour. Sometimes, there may be an underlying reason for water intoxication from conditions, such as liver disease, congestive heart failure, kidney problems and other medical issues. When your daughter mentions that the water at Mummy's house is better than at Daddy's house you know your onto something good. If a 5yo can taste the difference in the water quality what's that say about what is coming out of our taps. Thanks for making the small changes I've made in our health easy.
