There are two types of people in this world – those who pee in the shower and those who don’t.
The first category considers it a form of multitasking and would also think of brushing your teeth in the shower as a perfectly good way to save time. But, if you are not a part of this non-exclusive group, the idea of peeing in the shower may just seem plain disgusting to you.
A group of environmentally conscious university students in England have launched the campaign #GoWithTheFlow and are now targeting all shower peeing skeptics to tinkle under the sprinkle in the name of water conservation.
According to the students of the University of East Anglia, if every one of their 15,000 fellow students were to save a flush a day by peeing in the shower in the morning, in over a year they would save enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 26 times over. Their Facebook pages saves the goal is achievable as all you have to do is, “Wake up. Pee in the Shower. Save Water. Save the Planet.” They’re quick to point out that there is no real hygiene risk as urine is sterile.
According to their numbers, how much water could Australia save using this technique? To start, some 23,631,000 people live in Australia – keeping in mind the margin of error that arises by including children and babies who don’t take showers. If every Australian takes a shower each day, and every flush uses around 12 litres of water, then the country stands to save over 103,503,780,000 litres of water over the course of a year. That roughly equals the contents of a whopping 41,401 Olympic swimming pools.
